About this episode
In the late 1980s, ophthalmologist Dr Jean Carruthers and her husband, dermatologist Dr Alastair Carruthers, pioneered the use of botulinum toxin for cosmetic purposes, now the most common cosmetic procedure in the world. Jean has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, 70 book chapters and 9 textbooks and continues to lecture as a keynote speaker worldwide.
We hear how she learned to use botulinum toxin and the day she deliberately treated the world's first patient for frown lines: her receptionist. We learn how peers initially dismissed cosmetic injectables, and how Jean and Alastair designed the first trials and worked with Allergan as the treatment became Botox.
We explore how today's prescribing information was designed, how Dr Carruthers still treats, and the future of toxins: longer and shorter acting products, toxin resistance, the brands she favours and much more.
