About this episode
Dr Tom Decates is a cosmetic physician who specialises in cosmetic complications. He works at Erasmus University Hospital in the Netherlands, where he and his colleagues run a dedicated filler complications centre, and completed his PhD in 2021 on the origin of soft tissue filler adverse events.
In the first half of this two-part episode we discuss the types of serious filler complications, why managing expectations is critical, how the immune system responds to filler, early versus delayed inflammatory reactions, lumps, nodules and infections, bacteria and biofilm, skin cleaning and hygiene, dental health and hidden infection risks, the psychological impact on patients, COVID vaccines and filler reactions, genetic predisposition, and why smaller volumes may reduce risk.
