About this episode

In the second half of this two-part episode (listen to Episode 170 first), we continue our discussion of filler complications with Dr Tom Decates.

Dr Tom Decates is a cosmetic physician who specialises in cosmetic complications. He works at Erasmus University Hospital in the Netherlands, where he and his colleagues run a dedicated filler complications centre, and completed his PhD in 2021 on the origin of soft tissue filler adverse events.

We cover why patients present with lumps after filler, placement and product choice, using ultrasound to diagnose complications, delayed immune reactions, infection versus inflammation, real case examples, when to use hyaluronidase, steroids or antibiotics, reporting adverse events, the risks of high-volume treatment and poor training, and the need for dedicated complication centres.
